Mentors are Good

May 30, 2008

So – I met with one of my mentors yesterday and got the richest fare. First, we had this incredible sushi – Blue C Sushi at University Village if you are in Seattle. Wonderful!!!

Then she tweaked my life.

“What is on your heart?”
“I don’t know.”
“Find out what you want to do and pray for it.”

Somehow I get so bound up in the emotion and function of life and she just brought me back to the basics – it’s about following Jesus – prayer, walking in obedience, repentence. All the leadership skills in the world won’t help if you aren’t doing the basics.

It’s not like I wasn’t, but it sort of is. I knew them, and was doing them, but was trying to do them plus…plus…plus.

God reminded me last night that Gideon needed to be stripped down to the basics – no extras. Then God did the work. If I want to see God move, I need to be focused on Him, and Him alone.

Prayer, walking in obedience, repentence.

Life and Light

May 27, 2008

In Jesus was life that was the light of men – what does that mean? The next verse (see John 1) says that we (or at least the darkness) didn’t get it.

The next few verses tell us this:
1. the Light gives light to every (person).
2. Those who receive Him get the right to become the children of God.
3. The Word became flesh and lived among us.
4. The law came through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus.
5. No one has seen God, but Jesus was God in the flesh, a self-expression of God.

The Message says: What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by.

So here is the question – are we living Life, or are we just living? Do we have a clue what grace and truth came through Jesus, or are we busy trying to live by the law? Does it make a difference in my daily life that Jesus walked on this earth – God in the flesh? Or am I part of the darkness that just doesn’t get it? To those who received Him he gave the right become children of God – that is a starting point – I want to be a child of God. 1 John says that means I will obey His commands and that I will love others. This brings me back to grace and truth. What about you?
